Metasearch engine
The metasearch engine instance provided as part of nogoo.me services is based on the SearXNG software and runs on OpenBSD.
Start using SearXNG →What is SearXNG?
SearXNG is a free internet metasearch engine which aggregates results from various search services and databases. Users are neither tracked nor profiled.
Each request you make using this search engine will be cleaned from tracking parts and forwarded, on your behalf, to every engines enabled on this instance. The results will be cleaned from tracking bits, consolidated and presented to you.
The simplest way of using it is to point your Web browser to https://nogoo.me and start searching for the things you like.
SearXNG also supports OpenSearch. This means you can configure you preferred Web browser to use SearXNG as the default search engine. Mozilla explains how to add or remove a search engine in Firefox. Microsoft describes how to change your default search engine. We also made a short video available here.
Why should I use it?
Any service you use on the Internet (nogoo.me included) can get and store a certain amount of the information you provided when using those services.
Enhance privacy: SearXNG queries various search-engines on your behalf and clean the answers from tracking bits. This means less cookie crumbs on your workstation. This also means that Big Tech search engines can’t identify you from the incoming IP address. All IP addresses they get are the ones from nogoo.me’s infrastructure. Read more about SearXNG and Privacy here.
Unique search entrypoint: Using SearXNG, you only issue a single query on nogoo.me. It is forwarded to various remote search services on your behalf. And you get a single aggregated set of result pages.
Masquerade your localization: Your public IP address gives information about your geographical localization. Using the nogoo.me SearXNG instance, every requests will seem to come from nogoo.me’s infrastructure.
The nogoo.me servers will always be hosted in Europe. As of now, they are located in Germany. Note that this may be an issue if you search for information for your nearby geographical location. Remote search engines may assume you live near the nogoo.me servers. That said, I add the location in my queries (like “refurb shop paris”) when needed and get the relevant information most of the time.
